Minor in Health Information Management and Technology

Description

The 18-credit hour Health Information Management and Technology minor is available to students currently pursuing a Detroit Mercy major in areas other than Health Information Management and Technology.

By adding this minor, a student with a computer science-based major can expand his or her employment opportunities to the healthcare sector. Alternately, students with health care majors in Nursing or HSA can expand their employment options with health information management and technology skills to become administrative leaders within the HIM healthcare workforce.

With an HIMT minor, you will gain proficiency in healthcare data analyticsstandardized healthcare nomenclature, healthcare reimbursement and information governance as applied within the global scope of health information management and health services administration.

All classes in the Health Information Management and Technology minor adhere to the curriculum recommendations of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM), American Billing Association (ABA), Medical Group Management Association (MGMA), and the American Academy of Professional Coders (AACP) and provide instruction in health information management skills which will allow students to sit for multiple internationally recognized credentialing examinations.

Requirements

Students are required to complete the following 18 credit hours. It is recommended that HIM 1090 be taken first but courses may be completed in any sequence. No courses may be completed for pass/fail.

  • HIM 1090 Information Systems for Global Health (3 credits)
  • HIM 2600 Global Healthcare Data and Statistics (3 credits)
  • HIM 3400 Healthcare Revenue Cycle Management (3 credits)
  • HIM 3750 Healthcare Classification Systems (3 credits)
  • HIM 3900 Clinical Documentation and Management of Health Information (3 credits)
  • HIM 4250 Quality and Security of Health information (3 credits)

Medical terminology will be briefly covered throughout these courses. It is recommended that students complete HIM 2050 Medical Terminology for a broader introduction and application of medical terminology.  If the student has not completed an anatomy course, HIM 2080 PathoPharmacology for Health Professionals is also recommended.
