Technical Management (MS)

Description

The Master of Science in Technical Management (MSTM) program is a contemporary program designed for practicing engineers, scientists, technical specialists and technical managers. Program participants will gain new technical abilities, learn business acumen and develop the leadership skills required of a technical manager.

The Technical Management program is an interdisciplinary program that offers a rich and balanced blend of technical and management courses. It is designed to equip future technical managers with skills to face the challenges of global competition and an international workforce. It is a dynamic program as the curriculum is continuously enhanced to meet new and evolving technical challenges.

The Technical Management program is distinctive among management programs because the curriculum is immediately useful as participants can apply lessons to their current employ. All course are taught by seasoned faculty or by industry leaders who bring the real world expertise to the classroom.

In partnership with the International Quality Federation (IQF), the MSTM program provides options for Six Sigma Green Belt and Black Belt Certification. The certification itself is earned through IQF. These courses are open to non-MEM students.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the MSTM program, graduates will be able to:

  1. apply a unique set of technical and management skills
  2. recognize the effects of new technology on management issues and use tools and processes to leverage new opportunities.
  3. use technical principles and business leadership skills to organize and direct technical projects and manage people in technical jobs.
  4. compete in today's challenging global business environment.
  5. foster innovation and creativity via leadership and by example.

Admission Requirements

The Technical Management program accepts applicants that have an undergraduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) and have at least one year of industrial experience, research experience or equivalent. Applicants with degrees in physical sciences are encouraged to apply.

Master of Science in Technical Management Degree Requirements (36 credits)

The Master of Technical Management degree requires 36 credit hours beyond the baccalaureate degree: 15 credit hours in MSTM core courses, 6 credit hours of Business Electives and 15 credit hours in the student’s STEM area of interest. Students must maintain a GPA above 3.0. Grades below "C" will not advance the student towards graduation.

Transfer Credit

Transfer credit is governed by the office of the Registrar.  Students may transfer up to 12 credits for a master's degree program greater than or equal to 36 credit hours, such as MSTM.  Courses only transfer if taken for graduate credit with a grade earned of B (3.0) or higher. The approval of the program chairperson/direction is also required. Other restrictions may apply.

Required Engineering Management Core Courses (15 credit hours)

  • EMGT 5010 Management and Leadership of a Technical Workforce (3 credits)
  • EMGT 5020 Economic Considerations of Technical Businesses (3 credits)
  • EMGT 5030 Financial Decision Making for Technical Industries (3 credits)
  • EMGT 5040 Administration of Technical Businesses (3 credits)
  • EMGT 5110 Technical Decision Analysis (3 credits) or
    • MBA 5120 Statistical Analysis for Decision Making, or
    • MBA 5200 Decision Analysis (3 credits)

Business Management Elective Courses (6 credit hours)

Choose two 5000-level courses from MSTM or MBA business management courses. Please consult your advisor for suggested courses.

Technical Electives Courses (15 credit hours)

Choose five 5000-level courses from a technical discipline. Please consult your advisor for suggested courses.
